ESOL

GOAL / ESOL Program Objective:
The goal of the ESOL language instruction educational program for EL students is to increase both English language proficiency (ELP) and academic language proficiency in content-area subject matter. Successful ESOL language programs focus on collaboration and shared accountability for the success of all EL students.

Objetivo del programa GOAL / ESOL:
El objetivo del programa educativo de instrucción ESOL para estudiantes de EL es aumentar tanto el dominio del idioma inglés (ELP) como el dominio del lenguaje académico en las materias del área de contenido. Los programas de idiomas de ESOL exitosos se concentran en la colaboración y la responsabilidad compartida para el éxito de todos los estudiantes EL.

Information about the ESOL program:
This program begins in Kindergarten and continues through high school.   The program works to increase levels of English proficiency in the areas of:

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

ESOL Eligibility Process:

• Parent completes the Home Language Survey in his/her primary language upon enrollment into a US school for the very FIRST time.
• If the survey indicates that the child speaks a language other than English, an appropriate screener is administered.
• The student qualifies to receive ESOL services if their English proficiency falls below a certain criteria. We follow the eligibility criteria of the GADOE ELP (English Language Proficiency) assessor to determine if the potential EL qualifies for EL status.
• Once eligibility is determined a Notification of Eligibility is sent home and services begin immediately.

Proceso de elegibilidad de ESOL:·   

• Los padres completan la encuesta sobre el idioma que principal que se habla en hogar al inscribirse en una escuela de los Estados Unidos por PRIMERA vez.
• Si la encuesta indica que el niño habla un idioma distinto al inglés, se realiza una evaluación adecuada.
• El estudiante califica para recibir servicios de ESOL si su dominio del inglés cae por debajo de ciertos criterios. Nosotros seguimos los criterios de elegibilidad de evaluación de GADOE ELP (Dominio del idioma inglés) para determinar si el estudiante califica para el estatus de EL.
• Una vez que se determina la elegibilidad, se envía una Notificación de elegibilidad a casa y los servicios comienzan de inmediato.

Accommodations

Why have accommodations?
ELL students should be provided equitable access to the curriculum through the use of accommodations.

Students receive accommodations to:

1. Help them understand the content
2. Help them complete assignments or homework
3. Help them improve their English
4. Help them feel included and comfortable

Some basic classroom accommodations offered include:

1. Small group
2. Explain or paraphrase directions/instructions in English
3. Repetition of directions in English
4. Extended time

Adaptaciones:
¿Por qué tener adaptaciones?
Los estudiantes ELL deben tener acceso equitativo al plan de estudios mediante el uso de adaptaciones.

 Los estudiantes reciben adaptaciones para:
1. Para ayudarlos a comprender el contenido
2. Para ayudarlos a completar asignaciones o tareas
3. Para ayudarlos a mejorar su inglés
4. Para ayudarlos a sentirse incluidos y cómodos

 Algunas adaptaciones básicas en el aula que se ofrecen incluyen:
1. Grupo pequeño
2. Explicar o parafrasear direcciones/instrucciones en inglés
3. Repetición de instrucciones en inglés
4. Tiempo extendido

Testing Accommodations:
Based on state guidelines, the testing committee must determine if the student qualifies to receive any testing accommodations. This is done after examining WIDA Screener or ACCESS scores along with other academic data and teacher recommendations.

ACCESS :
ACCESS stands for "Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners"

• Students take the ACCESS test to determine if they are ready to exit the ESOL program.
• All students who are in the ESOL program in Georgia must take this test.
• This test also shows progression based on the level of mastery of the English student.
• We analyze the results to see how ACCESS better serve our students.
• Test is given during January and February of each year.

Adaptaciones para el examen:
Según las pautas estatales, el comité de pruebas debe determinar si el estudiante califica para recibir adaptaciones en las pruebas. Esto se hace después de examinar los puntajes de “WIDA Screener” o “ACCESS” junto con otros datos académicos y recomendaciones de los maestros. 

ACCESS :

• ACCESS significa "Evaluación de la comprensión y comunicación en inglés de estado a estado para estudiantes que están aprendiendo el idioma inglés"
• Los estudiantes toman la prueba de ACCESS para determinar si están listos para salir del programa ESOL.
• Todos los estudiantes que están en el programa ESOL en Georgia deben tomar este examen.
